A store full of Angry Birds

A Finnish retailer in partnership with game maker Rovio has pipped a Chinese plan to open the world’s first Angry Birds store.

An estimated 400 million copies of the Angry Birds game app have now been downloaded for paying on iPhones, ipads and other hand held devices.

Last month news emerged a Chinese Angry Birds store was set to open backed by Rovio - but a local retail group worked with Rovio to pip the Chinese to the post with a store of its own in the company’s home country Finland.

The opening attracted tens of thousands of people, with many camping outside the store for two nights to be first in line to check out the offerings.

Angry Birds - the store - sells cuddly versions of the suicidal birds whose job in the game is to eradicate lazy pigs in a series of environments which get harder to conquer as the game progresses.

Rovio has a raft of different merchandise on sale in the Helsinki shop, including accessories, shirts, plush toys, bags, and games. There are interactive life-size slingshot and custom decorations on display as well.

The Angry Birds store is located within Verkkokauppa.com’s new 20,000sqm megastore in Jatkansaari, which officially opened at 11:11 on November 11.

Rovio was founded in 2003 as a mobile game development studio, and the company has developed several award-winning titles for various mobile platforms.

In 2009, Rovio released Angry Birds, a casual puzzle game for touchscreen smartphones that became a worldwide phenomenon from 2010 onwards. The Angry Birds games have enjoyed continuing worldwide chart success, and the franchise has since expanded to a variety of new business areas.

Rovio is rapidly expanding its activities in broadcast media, merchandising, publishing and services. Rovio's headquarters are located in Finland.
