Record sales for DJs

David Jones will work to avoid a repeat of the website meltdown that marred its version of the online Click Frenzy one-day sale.

The department store chain's CEO Paul Zahra insists it had a phenomenal response to its online and in-store sale, despite its website crashing.

Although it was not part of the Click Frenzy 24-hour promotion involving hundreds of retailers offering discounts and promotions online, David Jones ran its own separate promotion.

Zahra said David Jones had a record day of online and in-store sales.

"It was truly a phenomenal event," he told reporters during a conference call on Wednesday.

However, he stressed it was just one day's worth of sales.

Zahra said the unprecedented demand caused the department store chain's new website to crash on Tuesday and the company was working with its technology provider IBM to fix the problem.

"The site simply went into meltdown and could not cope with the traffic, which caused the outage," Zahra said.

"It's fixable, we know what we need to do and we are working both locally and internationally to get that fixed as quickly as possible."

Zahra said the new David Jones website had double the visitors and triple the sales since it relaunched on November 8.

He said he expected customers to return to the website despite the outage. "Absolutely people will come back," Zahra said.

We conducted a similar campaign and rode the coat tails of the click frenzy hype. We generated the entire month’s online sales target in two days. It was a phenomenal success for us. Thanks Click Frenzy for contributing significantly to our marketing budget!
