Australian Game stores shuttered

Administrators of the failed Game chain have closed 60 of the business’s 92 Australian stores, most likely ending any hope of salvaging the business.

Game was placed in voluntary administration earlier this month after its UK based parent collapsed, saddled with debt, hit by falling sales and unable to extend payment terms with vulnerable suppliers.

Administrator, Pricewaterhouse Coopers said 264 store employees would be made redundant and 17 staff at head office. Their benefits were likely to be protected by the Federal Government’s General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme (Geers).

A fortnight ago PwC said it would release a limited number of the game Diablo III to customers who had pre-ordered and prepaid for the game.

"I regret that Diablo III isn't available across the whole network of stores and to all customers who have pre-ordered, however the stock on hand represents the total stock ordered prior to the appointment of Voluntary Administrators yesterday and unfortunately, there are insufficient funds on hand to purchase any additional copies,” said Kate Warwick, joint Administrator.

Customers had been advised to check availability in the store where they ordered and if the game was not available they were directed to a website for instructions on how to lodge a claim with the administrator.
