Broadway Sydney to launch giant rooster for Lunar New Year

Broadway Shopping Centre, Broadway, Shopping, Retail, Shops - interior-1Mirvac-owned shopping centre, Broadway Sydney, will construct a giant rooster using recycled pieces of timber as part of its Lunar New Year celebrations.

Elyssa Sykes-Smith, whose acclaimed work has previously appeared in Australia’s largest outdoor art exhibition “Sculptures By The Sea”, will build the giant rooster in real time over five days starting today. The centre has invited children to take part in the activity.

“I am really looking forward to building a giant rooster at Broadway Sydney as part of their Lunar New Year celebrations,” said Sykes-Smith. “The artwork will be created using recycled pieces of timber, some of which was used in my previous work at Sculptures By The Sea last year.”

She said it is really poignant that the recycled materials had a past life, and will now be used to celebrate the start of a new year. Meanwhile, the most special part of the project is where kids will take part of the artistic process.

“They can paint pieces of timber in gold and red and sign their names before I add their masterpieces to the installation, or they can paint their own mini wooden roosters that they can then take home,” said Sykes-Smith.

The centre has also lined up activities to welcome the Year of the Rooster, including children’s masterclasses, which will take place every day from 23-27 January, where they can enjoy themed activities, and arts and crafts. There will be a traditional Lion Dance on 28 January in association with Chemistworks. Free fortune cookie giveaways and retailer offers will run throughout the three-week festivities.

Justine Saltmarsh, Broadway Sydney’s centre manager, said they are excited about Sykes-Smith’s artwork, especially as the centre received positive community feedback from the five permanent art installations that were introduced during the grand re-opening of level two last year.

“Adding this live element offers customers an opportunity to really be a part of the artistry process,” she said.
