Do Aussies want another Aldi?

aldiThree out of four Aussies want another discount supermarket chain in Australia, according to new survey by Canstar Blue.

In light of Aldi’s expansion into South Australia and Western Australia in 2016 and long-running speculation about fellow German discount supermarket chain, Lidl, coming to Australia, Canstar Blue has just completed a survey around how consumers feel about discount supermarkets and how much of an appetite there may be for another Aldi-like chain in Australia.

The Canstar Blue research found that 74 per cent of Australians would like to see another discount chain like Aldi open in Australia. The survey, of 3000 adults, also found that 85 per cent of Australians believe Aldi has been good for consumers.

Aldi is expected to open as many as 80 new stores in the next 12 months. Costco is also expected to open its ninth and tenth Australian stores, in Sydney and Melbourne, respectively, as it also continues to make its mark on Australia’s grocery sector.

“Consumers have had a taste for cutting grocery costs and now they’re hungry for more,” said head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle. “Aldi has completely changed the supermarket landscape and for many people there will be no going back.

“Even those who don’t shop at Aldi can benefit from its presence because of the way other supermarkets are reacting to the challenge. It’s helping to make us all a bit more price-conscious when we get to the checkout.”

Other results from the survey include 59 per cent of respondents saying they would shop at a discount supermarket store if one opened near to where they live. That number jumped to 77 per cent in South Australia and 80 per cent in Western Australia where the first Aldi stores are expected to open in the first quarter of 2016.
