Kaufland gets to work on first SA store, with planning approved for another

Kaufland Australia has commenced construction of its first South Australia store in Prospect and has received planning approval for its Le Cornu site in Forestville.

Prospect is the second test store in the Australian expansion, following Dandenong which commenced construction last week.

The German retail giant has submitted an additional site in Paradise, South Australia, for development approval.

The retailer has invested $24 million in the Prospect store development and expects to generate 150 jobs throughout construction phase, with an additional 100 new jobs once operational.

Kaufland Australia managing director, Julia Kern was joined by Premier of South Australia, Steven Marshall to mark the beginning of construction in Prospect on Wednesday. She thanked all involved with the project and said Kaufland Australia is “proud to call Prospect home”.

“To be building one of our first stores in Australia, here in Prospect, reflects our passion and desire to grow with this incredible State,” she said.

Kern said the retailer is eager to showcase local produce at the new store.

“South Australia is home to amazing produce, and we are looking forward to showcasing some of the world-class produce as a part of our range. So far, we have had great conversations with local suppliers, and we look forward to continuing to partner with local businesses wherever possible.”

Kaufland’s Australian expansion has ramped up significantly in recent weeks. Last week the retailer received approval for a further two stores in Victoria bringing its total in the state to five, with a further nine under review. Kaufland has also acquired three sites in Queensland.

The retail giant has already commenced construction of its $255 million distribution centre in Mickleham and started work on its first store in Dandenong last week.

Kern said Kaufland is focused on delivering simple, quality products at its stores.

“Being customer centric is at the heart of all that we do. Our aim is to deliver simplicity, quality, variety and price throughout the South Australian community, and provide an uncompromising quality food shop for our customers.”
