Metcash makes fresh appointment

metcashMetcash has hired former Woolworths senior executive, Peter Pokorny as GM, fresh food, as the grocery wholesaler aims to improve its fresh food offering as part of its five year transformation strategy.

Metcash announced plans earlier this year to spend up to $480 million to transform its business over the next five years so it can better compete with retail giants Coles and Woolworths.

Pokorny, who has more than 35 years’ retail experience, was national produce manager and then GM, fresh food, for Woolworths from 1986 to 2006.

In 2007, he joined Harris Farm Markets as strategy director, and in 2008 became GM, produce, at Coles, before setting up a fresh food consultancy firm in 2009.
