Most retail workers have a side hustle, study finds
Almost three quarters (70 per cent) of Australian retail workers currently have a side hustle, with many workers heading straight from a retail job into a passion project after hours, according to new research from the AMP Foundation.
And for those who don’t have a side hustle, it’s not for lack of wanting. Nearly half (49 per cent) said money was the main thing holding them back from pursuing a side project.
Lack of time (16 per cent) and work commitments (12 per cent) are other key factors preventing their workers from following their passion.
AMP Foundation head of sustainability Helen Liondos said with the right support, retail workers would be able to make their dreams a reality.
“The research shows retail workers want to achieve amazing things in the community, but money often prevents them from making a positive impact,” Liondos said.
Some companies, however, are doing something about it.
Meal delivery business Deliveroo offers free education for riders through its Deliveroo Scholarship Scheme and recently announce a new partnership with UK fintech business Portify.
The partnership will give Deliveroo’s Australian riders access to a digital tool that provides skill development, as well as online support with personal budgeting, which is ‘portable’ between jobs – meaning these riders can choose where, and when, to work and still benefit from the app.
“Portify and Open Classrooms are important initiatives that Deliveroo is introducing to provide more support for our riders – whether it’s offering perks such as discounted coffee at selected restaurants or gym memberships, help with financial management or access to online learning programs to boost skills development,” said Deliveroo country manager for Australia Levi Aron.
“Riders are at the heart of all we do and we want to provide more support for them – this is just one way we can make that happen.”
