Poll: Does your business help staff upskill?
As the workforce continues to be disrupted by automation and digitisation, many workers fear being left behind without the skills needed to retain their employment.
According to a 2018 study by McKinsey Global Institute, as many as 375 million workers, or 14 per cent of the global workforce, may need to switch occupations as they are pushed out of their field.
As the skills workers need evolve, businesses can offer avenues for their staff to learn how to remain relevant, and productive, in their industry.
Lululemon, for example, has recently partnered with Swinburne University to offer free business courses for its store, regional, and training managers. The business is fully funding the initiative, which will see graduates learn leadership skills, HR and staff management, marketing, operations, finance, as well as strategy.
Lululemon Australia and New Zealand managing director Paul Tinkler said the course will provide an opportunity for its team leaders to develop long-term retail careers.
Battery World partnered with TAFE institutions in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria to help its staff earn Certificate II qualifications in auto-electric technology.
Through the partnership, Battery World staff are taken through an accelerated course which offers the opportunity to upskill – something even older Battery World staff members are taking advantage of.
According to Battery World’s operations trainer Coralee Haskew, employees that feel valued and are given the opportunity to learn tend to stick with an employer.
