SA reaps rewards of public holiday trade

South Australia’s move to open city shops on public holidays has been “wildly” popular with consumers, says Premier Jay Weatherill.

The premier said an independent review had revealed strong support for the move to open CBD shops on public holidays, including over Easter and Boxing Day.

City shops reported sales worth $57 million across the nine days of extra trading over the past year with up to 120,000 people coming into the city on each of those days.

“South Australians have voted with their feet when it comes to public holiday trading in the city,” Weatherill said.

The review also showed strong support for SA’s two new half-day public holidays on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, which offered workers penalty rates on those days.
