Sydney trails Melbourne in e-commerce savvy

online shopping concept, trolley, Workers and residents in Melbourne’s CBD shopped online nearly twice as much as their Sydney counterparts in July this year, according to data released from secure online payments platform eWay.

The data looked at 2.2 million transactions by eWay powered online retailers in July 2014, up from 1.9 million in July 2013.

The report also showed Toowoomba was the regional online shopping capital of Australia, with more than 0.4 per cent of the country’s e-commerce transactions conducted that month from the town.

The data shows those in the Melbourne CBD, covering 250,000 daily commuters and residents, represented 1.8 per cent of Australia’s transactions during July through an eWay merchant, topping the top 10 postcodes for online transactions during the month.

In total, Australians made $361 million worth of online transactions during July through eWay retailers, up 19.3 per cent from the year before at $303 million, with an average $162.72 per transaction.

eWay, founded in 1998, is used by 15,500 online retailers across six countries. Its customers process more than $3.4 billion in transactions annually, with eWay’s payment platform accounting for approximately 22 per cent of the online retail market in Australia.

Matt Bullock, founder and CEO of eWay, said being able to dive into the aggregate data around online transactions in Australia shows some interesting trends.

“It’s no surprise that the city centres of Sydney and Melbourne rank quite highly in our Online Retail Report. It shows a clear trend that Aussie workers, and their bosses, are very comfortable with deliveries coming to the office.

“Diving deeper into July’s figures, the sheer volume of transactions we’re seeing in regional areas is really intriguing. Some of the categories that experienced the biggest growth might also surprise a lot of people.

“Overall year on year growth of e-commerce transactions managed by eWay is up a staggering 19.3 per cent to $361 million, so it seems our love for online shopping is showing no sign of slowing down.”
