Woolworths buys Chinese liquor business

 

Woolworths, supermarket, wooliesWoolworths has acquired one of China’s largest alcoholic drinks distributor, Summergate, and its subsidiary Pudao Wines, for an undisclosed sum.

Woolworths is one of Australia’s largest drinks businesses, owning Dan Murphy’s, BWS, and Cellarmasters, with the purchase one of the first major international acquisitions for the supermarket giant.

As part of the deal, Ian Ford, CEO of Summergate, is expected to retain his position. Ford and Summergate co-founder, Brendan O’Toole, will also stay on the company’s board of directors.

Summergate, was established in 1999 and boasts a portfolio of 80 brands including Villa Maria, Concha y Toro, and Chateau Masur. Its subsidiary, Pudao, has retail stores in Shanghai and Beijing, and an online store.

The company employs more than 400 people, with 13 offices and 11 distribution centres.
